LOCAL BLACK BELTS TO GIVE MARTIAL ARTS DEMONSTRATION AT ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
All proceeds will go to benefit non-profit organization Team Pride
Tempe, AZ: — A group of young martial artists will present an exciting martial arts show with high kicking, fast punching and dazzling weapon demonstrations. The show is scheduled for Saturday, January 28 at 10 A.M. in the PE West Building on the Tempe Campus of Arizona State University. Admission is $5.00 and proceeds benefit TEAM PRIDE, a local non-profit that provides martial arts training to at-risk and disadvantaged children.
“This team consists of twelve local black belts who range in age from 8 to 26,” according to Chief Master Bill Babin, a Mesa resident and owner of “Babin’s ATA Martial Arts”. All of these black belts are students or instructors at this academy.
“This particular show is a highly complex, carefully choreographed showpiece designed to highlight this team’s extraordinary martial arts skills,” Babin said. “They have been training since last April and are heading to the preliminary round of the World Team competition being held in Las Vegas on March 23.”
The team is coached by 3rd Degree black belt Zachary Birdwell who has 13 years of training in BOTH Taekwondo and dance, including classical ballet and hip hop. According to Zach, “this show on January 28 will be part of the opening ceremonies for the tournament we are holding on that day. It will start at 10 A.M., so make sure to arrive early to be able to see all of the moves up close!”
Babin further explained that there will be martial arts action throughout the day at the American Taekwondo Association tournament being held at the same venue.
Chief Master Babin has been teaching taekwondo in Mesa with his wife for over thirty years. They have trained hundreds of black belts, as well as numerous state and world champions.

The ATA was established in 1969 by Haeng Ung Lee, a Korean immigrant who had a dream of making the world a better place through the discipline of the martial art of Taekwondo. Now known as Eternal Grandmaster, H.U. Lee began with one tiny school in Omaha, Nebraska and then built an international organization, headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas, that supports more than 1000 locations in North America, 19 of which are here in Phoenix. The ATA provides curriculum development, instructor certification, and sanctions for tournament competition and rank advancement. Although Eternal Grandmaster Lee is no longer with us, the ATA has remained strong under the leadership of our new Grandmaster, Soon Ho Lee, 9th degree black belt. With almost 300,000 members worldwide, the ATA is indeed making the world a better place, one black belt at a time.
